February 26-Finish Romeo and Juliet paper

Today was our last day to work on our Romeo and Juliet paper. I let kids know that I will be grading the papers tomorrow night, so they should make sure to finish before then.

I also gave them an example of what a good paper should look like. Here it is:

In the movie, Warm Bodies, Julie is a young woman who lives in a city surrounded by a concrete wall. The wall is there to protect humans from zombies. R, on the other hand, lives outside the wall: he’s a zombie. One day, Julie is sent out on a mission along with a group of friends to find medicine for the community. There, she bumps into R and his group of friends who are hungrily looking for food. As soon as R lays eyes on Julie, he falls in love instantly. From there, R makes it his mission to protect and be with Julie. In the play Romeo and Juliet, Romeo falls in love with Juliet after seeing her at a party he intruded into. From there they make it their mission to be together. Unfortunately their families hate each other, but Romeo and Juliet are willing to do anything to be together. Although Warm Bodies and  Romeo and Juliet have similar themes and characters, they portray the scenes differently.
The theme from Warm Bodies and Romeo and Juliet is freakishly alike. For example, in Romeo and Juliet there are two families who hate each other. We know this because it tells us that, “Ancient grudge break to new mutiny.” In Warm Bodies on the other hand, there are two species of people; one dead, and one alive, that hate each other as well. Also, in both texts, the theme of mismatched lovers is identical; Romeo and Juliet, and R and Julie. They are kept apart because of the hatred from their “families.”
The city where Warm Bodies takes place, is never truly revealed, but many people claim it takes place in Montreal, Canada. That is one of the big differences between both texts because, Romeo and Juliet takes place in Verona, Italy. Another big difference is that Warm Bodies is set in the future. I know that because in the movie they show a few sets of technology that we do not have to this day. Finally, one major similarity is that in both Romeo and Juliet and Warm Bodies, there is a balcony scene. The balcony scene is portrayed differently though. For example, in Warm Bodies, R stands outside Julie’s house and waits for her to come out to the balcony. There, he is introduced to Julie’s best friend, Nora, and gets invited in to their home. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo stands outside Juliet’s balcony and listens to her for a while before he makes himself known.
The characters in both texts are extremely similar, as well as their names. In Warm Bodies, R only remembers the first letter of his name, which leads to his nickname “R”. Note how Romeo starts with the letter “R.” Julie, could also be short for Juliet. Also, in both texts, there is some type of manly figure in both Juliet and Julie’s life, who are a barrier between them and their “true love.” In Romeo and Juliet, that person is Count Paris, who ends up killed by Romeo. In Warm Bodies that person is Perry who also ends up getting killed by R. Once again, note how both their names start with the letter “p.” Another similarity is R’s best friend, M. M could easily stand for Mercutio from Romeo and Juliet. Both characters are the light of the stage. Finally, the Nurse from Romeo and Juliet is similar to Julie’s best friend, Nora. In Romeo and Juliet, the Nurse protects Juliet from many things and people. In Warm Bodies, Nora, supports and helps Julie through rough times as well.
As you can see, Warm Bodies and Romeo and Juliet have quite a bit in common. You wouldn’t think that a movie about the living dead would be so similar to one of the greatest plays written of all time, would you?

February 22 and 23- Begin Romeo and Juliet paper

We began discussing the different themes in Romeo and Juliet as a way to prepare for our compare/contrast paper.

Here is the outline for the paper-make sure to fill out the boxes at the end:

Writing Assignment for R&J

The story of young lovers who are kept apart because of misunderstandings or prejudice is an old one.  Shakespeare used this ancient tale as the basis for Romeo and Juliet.
Find a modern story with a theme that is similar to Romeo and Juliet.  The story could be from a movie, TV show, novel, short story, or song.

1.     Compare and/or contrast the theme, setting, and characters of this story to Romeo and Juliet.

2.     Include specific examples from Romeo and Juliet and from the story you are comparing Romeo and Juliet to.

3.     This will be a five paragraph paper.

Comparing Romeo and Juliet to Maria and the Captain in Sound of Music

In the movie, The Sound of Music, Maria is a nun assigned to be the nanny for a widower’s seven children.  The widower, Captain Von Trapp, is a strict, emotionless man and Maria is an outgoing, fun woman.  Despite their differences and the interference of outside forces, Von Trapp and Maria ultimately fall in love and get married.  In the play, Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet also overcome many problems, fall in love and get married.  Although Romeo and Juliet and The Sound of Music have a similar theme, the setting and the characters are completely different.
In Romeo and Juliet, the setting takes place in Verona, Italy, approximately 400 years ago.  The Sound of Music takes place in Austria just prior to World War II.  Also, the story of Romeo and Juliet focuses on the characters of two teenagers, who are just now finding love for the first time.  In The Sound of Music, Maria and Von Trapp are both older (Von Trapp has seven kids!) and have already experienced a deep, strong love:  Von Trapp for his first wife, and Maria for God and the convent.  In addition, in Romeo and Juliet, all of the secondary characters, from Benvolio to the nurse, seem to be trying to end Romeo and Juliet’s affair.  In The Sound of Music, Von Trapp’s children are the secondary characters and they spend a good part of the movie trying to get the two together.
Despite these many differences, Romeo and Juliet and The Sound of Music are clearly similar stories.  Both rely heavily on the theme of a couple finding love despite great odds.  In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet fall in love with each other despite their parent’s hatred for each other, Tybalt’s meddling and Mercutio’s death.  In The Sound of Music, Maria and Von Trapp fall in love with each other despite their own dislike for each other, the baroness’ meddling and the danger of the Nazi party.

February 18 and 20- Grabber sentence and finish Note to College Roommate

Today I explained the rest of the Note to College Roommate writing. It will follow this format:

INTRO PARAGRAPH
At least two sentences

·        Grabber sentence (see grabber worksheet)
·        Thesis statement (“I would make a great roommate because…”)

BODY PARAGRAPH
At least eight sentences

·        Eight sentence story of one specific time you exhibited a good roommate quality

CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH
At least two sentences

·        Restate thesis (“As you can see…”)

February 16 and 17-Begin Note to College Roommate

We are going to be working on organizing our writing, so we began with a short, easy "Note to a Future College Roommate."

Here is an example of what their writing will end up looking like:

In a Note to my Future College Roommate

I get along with most people, but please don’t tell me you have a harmless pet snake named Fangs.  I hate spiders, lizards, and anything else that goes bump in the night.  Now wait! Before you beg the housing office for a new roommate, let me also say that I can be counted on to protect you should the need arise.
I first stayed in the dorm as a fourteen-year-old summer ballet student.  About halfway through the session, my roommate woke me very late one night.  For a change, I woke up right away.  Even without my glasses I could see her big eyes as she pointed to the door.  There was a scratching sound outside.  “Grab something,” I whispered.  She snatched a pair of scissors while I reached for a bottle of 409.  If our visitor succeeded in entering, I planned on squirting some cleaner in his eyes.  Suddenly I remembered…dial 2222 for the campus police.  I crept to the phone while the intruder yelled and banged at the door.  When the police arrived, they took him away, and we slept happily ever after.

I don’t have a black belt in karate, but I did manage to stay calm under pressure.  (That’s strange, considering I’m not that calm when I’m not under pressure.)  Anyway…remember your bottle of 409, and we’ll be just fine.

Students then brainstormed five reasons why they would make a good roommate.
Next, they picked one reason and wrote an 8-10 sentence story of one time they exhibited this quality.

February 10 and 11-Act 4 Scene 3

Today we discussed Juliet's fears of taking the Friar's potion. Students completed the following worksheet:

IV.III Soliloquy
Juliet is trying to work up the resolve to take the Friar’s potion.
Read all of Juliet’s soliloquy (lines 14-58)
Write down each different possibility that she fears may happen
Lines 25-28

Lines 31-36

Lines 49-54

On the back of this paper, draw each of these possibilities.
Then, just before she drinks, she sees something.  What does she see?

Why do you think that’s what she sees?

February 8 and 9- III.V dialogue and IV.I homework

Today we discussed the fallout from Romeo's murder of Tybalt- Students read the beginning of III.V and worked on the following worksheet with a partner:

This Scene begins in Juliet’s room as the sun is rising…
For each character’s part, summarize what they are saying…

JULIET
Wilt thou be gone? it is not yet near day:
It was the nightingale, and not the lark,
That pierced the fearful hollow of thine ear;
Nightly she sings on yon pomegranate-tree:
Believe me, love, it was the nightingale.

ROMEO
It was the lark, the herald of the morn,
No nightingale: look, love, what envious streaks
Do lace the severing clouds in yonder east:
Night's candles are burnt out, and jocund day
Stands tiptoe on the misty mountain tops.
I must be gone and live, or stay and die.

JULIET
Yon light is not day-light, I know it, I:
It is some meteor that the sun exhales,
To be to thee this night a torch-bearer,
And light thee on thy way to Mantua:
Therefore stay yet; thou need'st not to be gone.

ROMEO
Let me be ta'en, let me be put to death;
I am content, so thou wilt have it so.
I'll say yon grey is not the morning's eye,
'Tis but the pale reflex of Cynthia's brow;
Nor that is not the lark, whose notes do beat
The vaulty heaven so high above our heads:
I have more care to stay than will to go:
Come, death, and welcome! Juliet wills it so.
How is't, my soul? let's talk; it is not day.

JULIET
It is, it is: hie hence, be gone, away!
It is the lark that sings so out of tune,
Straining harsh discords and unpleasing sharps.
Some say the lark makes sweet division;
This doth not so, for she divideth us:
Some say the lark and loathed toad change eyes,
O, now I would they had changed voices too!
Since arm from arm that voice doth us affray,
Hunting thee hence with hunt's-up to the day,
O, now be gone; more light and light it grows.

Next, I gave students their homework for the evening:

IV.I questions

Start reading this scene at line 45.

What does Juliet want from the Friar?

What does Juliet say she’ll do if the Friar doesn’t have any ideas?  Write the line that proves this.

Finish this quote:
“Be not so long to speak…”

What is the Friar’s suggestion?

Juliet seems pretty desperate.  Write down three things she’d be willing to do rather than marry Paris.

1.

2.

3.

Describe what the Friar’s “liquor” will do to Juliet.

After Juliet drinks the potion, what is the rest of the plan?

What do you think of this idea?  Explain yourself.

February 3 and 4- Night poem and III.III questions

Today students got into groups and wrote a poem with the topic being Night- we discussed Juliet's monologue about her wedding night also.

Students then were given questions to answer after reading Act III Scene III. If they didn't finish in class, it should be finished as homework.

Questions for III.III.

For each question, give an answer, and notate the line or lines that prove your answer.

At the beginning of this scene, does Romeo know what the Prince’s decision is?

Why is Romeo unhappy with the punishment?

According to the Nurse, how is Juliet acting?

In Friar Laurence’s speech III.III.111-161, he gives Romeo many reasons why he should be happy.  List two.

February 1 and 2- Juliet's monologue on Night

Today we watched III.I and discussed it. We also took a close look at Juliet's monologue at the beginning of III.II. Here is the handout for it.

Instructions for reading:

Circle everytime the word NIGHT is used.
Underline words or phrases that are confusing.

Spread thy close curtain, love-performing night,
That runaway's eyes may wink and Romeo
Leap to these arms, untalk'd of and unseen.
Lovers can see to do their amorous rites
By their own beauties; or, if love be blind,
It best agrees with night. Come, civil night,
Thou sober-suited matron, all in black,
And learn me how to lose a winning match,
Play'd for a pair of stainless maidenhoods:
Hood my unmann'd blood, bating in my cheeks,
With thy black mantle; till strange love, grown bold,
Think true love acted simple modesty.
Come, night; come, Romeo; come, thou day in night;
For thou wilt lie upon the wings of night
Whiter than new snow on a raven's back.
Come, gentle night, come, loving, black-brow'd night,
Give me my Romeo; and, when he shall die,
Take him and cut him out in little stars,
And he will make the face of heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun.
O, I have bought the mansion of a love,
But not possess'd it, and, though I am sold,
Not yet enjoy'd: so tedious is this day
As is the night before some festival
To an impatient child that hath new robes
And may not wear them.

What do you think the IDEA of the word night means to Juliet?
